On the Island of Berk, a young Viking, Hiccup is an outcast in society and wants to join the town’s fight against the dragons who continually attack the Viking town. However, his father and all of the other Vikings won’t let him do so. So Hiccup ventures into the fight himself and catches a Night Fury Dragon - a very rare, dangerous breed of dragon. However, he can’t bring himself to kill it, and instead becomes a friend with the Dragon he names Toothless. Hiccup finds out that all of the Vikings misjudged and misinterpreted the dragon species - so he makes it his destiny to prove to the other Vikings, who are unwilling to change their ways, that dragons are not mean-hearted creatures.
